Zoning and Housing Element Compliance Update - August 2025
San Francisco’s “Family Zoning Plan” moves forward as the city faces pressure to meet state housing mandates. Planning Department maps (see below) show that corridors like Geary, Balboa, Taraval, and Judah could see mid- and high-rise buildings up to 8-14 stories replace longstanding limits, increasing density near transit and reshaping historically lower-rise neighborhoods. While supporters view the changes as necessary for meeting the state’s requirements, the plan raises questions about local impacts, including affordability, strain on infrastructure, and the preservation of what makes San Francisco special. With the January 2026 deadline looming, the outcome will have lasting implications for how our city grows.
