CITY HALL UPDATES
Mayor Lurie hopes City Charter reform will be on the November ballot
In an effort to promote more accountability in city government, the mayor identified reasons why SF residents deserve the opportunity to vote on a charter amendment designed to:
Streamline SF’s contracting system to “cut red tape, reduce delays and save taxpayer dollars,”
Limit a BOS majority to one ballot measure, resulting in shorter ballots and decreased voter apathy, and
Decrease the benefits of continued bureaucracy and scattered responsibility across city departments.
Ignoring the recommendations of a voter-approved agency contradicts efforts to cut government spending
Despite voting to establish a Commission Streamlining Task Force in 2024, San Franciscans won’t see the Board of Supervisors move forward with a majority of the taskforce recommendations designed to address excessive government bloat.
$240 million windfall to drop into City Hall’s lap
The mayor reportedly will follow up on a 2022 Health Commission directive and divert $240 million in inactive City Option funds to the general fund to help bridge San Francisco’s $877 million budget gap.
City Hall will use state funding to expand treatment and recovery capacity in San Francisco
Last month, San Francisco secured $100 million in Prop 1 funding (of the $1.18 billion that Governor Newsom released state-wide) to support three behavioral health/substance abuse facilities in San Francisco.
