CSF Conversation on "Recovery First" with Supervisor Dorsey

Join Supervisor Matt Dorsey for an in-depth discussion about his “Recovery First” ordinance—an effort to formally align San Francisco’s drug policy with the goal of long-term remission from substance use disorder, defined as living a self-directed and healthy life, free from illicit drug use. This first-in-the-nation legislation passed unanimously out of the Public Safety and Neighborhood Services Committee with a positive recommendation, and now heads to the full Board of Supervisors for a vote. It has gained the support of the San Francisco Marin Medical Society, representing over 3,000 local physicians, as well as nationally respected public health experts including Dr. Keith Humphreys, Dr. John Maa, and Dr. Stanton Glantz. Still, the ordinance faces opposition from both sides of the debate—48Hills.com claims it undermines harm reduction, while Mothers Against Drug Addiction & Deaths has withdrawn its support, arguing it leans too far in that direction. Despite the political headwinds, Supervisor Dorsey remains steadfast in his belief that the City must embrace a recovery-centered approach that reflects what we would want for our own loved ones. As someone in long-term recovery himself, Supervisor Dorsey brings a deeply personal perspective to this work—and he’s asking for your support to help move this overdue policy forward. Please join us to learn more, ask questions, and be part of the conversation to reshape San Francisco’s approach to the drug crisis.
